Read on to find out how investors profit from foreign currency exchange
You’ve probably come across the term “forex trading” from time to time if you read about investments and finances. What exactly is forex trading? The term is shorthand for “foreign exchange trading.” Forex trading, in other words, consists of trading for foreign currencies.
A decade ago, foreign currency trading was cordoned off by barriers and restrictions, leaving only large banks and firms with access to the systems and tools needed to trade in foreign exchange. However, times have changed-today’s technology enables individual investors to trade in forex on many online platforms.
When selling and buying in the forex market, you will notice that four currency pairs dominate the trades. These four are the US Dollar versus the British pound, the Euro versus the US dollar, US dollar versus the Japanese Yen, and US dollar versus the Swiss franc.
When investing in currency, the goal is to hold a currency that increases in value in relation to other currencies. On a smaller scale, if you bought 100 British pounds for 200 US dollars, held the pounds for a week, and the value of pounds increased in relation to US dollars, you could then convert the pounds back into, say, 250 US dollars.
There are advantages to forex currency trading-unlike the domestic stock market, forex trading is open for trade 24 hours a day. Why? It’s always business hour somewhere on the globe. The daily volume of the forex market is about $1.2 trillion.
Another very important distinction to keep in mind is that forex currency trading does not revolve around an exchange such as the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ. No central body or organization acts as the middleman; trading circulates between international banking centers all over the globe.
Since there were financial restrictions and requirements and huge minimum transaction sizes, individual investors were pushed out of foreign exchange trading. However, widespread usage of the Internet opened up a new opportunity for individual investors who wanted to participate in foreign exchange. You can now open your own currency account through a forex currency broker online-this is similar to an online stock account.
Nowadays, practically anybody can open a currency account and buy and sell in practically any quantity. Since thousands of investors place orders through these brokers, the brokers are able to meet the huge minimum transaction sizes by buying in large bulk and distributing currency to the investors.
Forex trading has become considerably easier for the individual investor to pursue. While investing wisely can yield you much profit and wealth, it can also hold the risk of substantial loss if you’re not experienced or well-informed about the fluctuations of your currency. Before investing your money into a particular currency, read as much as you can about patterns, fluctuations, and trends in the currencies you’re considering.
